Social Media Marketing
The latest channel to join the various
online marketing methods is social media marketing. Seeking to
exploit the ever-growing plethora of social media sites, social
media marketing spreads its message through viral marketing and
the use of webapps such as reddit, Digg, Stumbleupon, Flickr,
iLike, Wikipedia, Squidoo, Last.fm, Twitter, etc.
Generally, these social media sites rely on user contribution
to provide content and discussion. For instance, Flickr is a
site where users can post photographs, both personal and business,
vote for other people's photos and discuss the merits of pictures
via a blog-like interface.
Commenting drives these sites so there is an element of what
used to be called publicity stunts - ie someone may post a controversial
article to gain readers and spread the conversation over the
web - this is very similar to link-baiting.
Social media marketing attracts companies who promote brand
and product awareness, especially to the younger demographic
on the internet and can be a very cost-effective way of spreading
a message or promoting products and services.
